A expansão da produção suinícola se deu pela intensificação do processo de criação dos animais. Os sistemas criatórios ao ar livre foram substituídos por sistemas intensivos com um espaço limitado e alta densidade animal. Devido ao confinamento, um maior número de animais em um espaço menor, além da maior movimentação maior de animais, também houve um aumento da frequência de determinadas afecções, dentre elas as afecções respiratórias, devido a sua forma de transmissão, patogenia, epidemiologia.
